Fishy business in Khanom

Khanom is a small, quiet fishing town founded in the reign of King U-thong some 800 years ago. Today it’s one of Thailand’s most pristine eco-destinations, and still largely undiscovered by tourism. It’s famous for its rare pink dolphins, which you’re almost guaranteed to see on a wildlife cruise with a local guide from Khanom Fishing and Tours. In this charming destination you’ll find swaying coconut palms and rubber plantations, lush jungles, dramatic limestone mountains and long stretches of untouched beaches. Go swimming, snorkelling or diving in the jade green waters; or have your toes nibbled at the Torn Tarn Fish Spa. Head to Khanom’s colourful harbour and watch as the fresh catch is unloaded. At the local market on Wednesdays the farmers sell their home-grown produce. Explore the mysterious pagodas and dinosaur-shaped formations of the Khao Wang Thong Cave; or visit Wat Kradangnga, an ancient temple featuring exquisite Buddhist murals. Khanom is reached from the nearby cities of Surat Thani, around an hour to the west; or Nakhon Si Thammarat, about an hour to the south. Ferries to Ko Samui and Ko Pha Ngan depart from Donsak Ferry Pier. Khanom is around two and a half hours from Krabi.
